To
be an effective Surveyor, whether of buildings or of land, close observation
is the essential. Dannatt was an articled pupil from age seventeen, a
student at the College of Estate Management. He developed within his family's
otherwise general practice, established in Greenwich in 1875, a surveying/architectural
side and virtually took over and ran the firm for nearly thirty years.
Much of his own work was in structural surveys and that, with the constant requirement to observe and assess every aspect of a building, is a task which produces and adds to experience upon each and every occasion; a very similar experience to that gained through the production of every painting, construction, collage, drawing or etching.
